Apple Pay setup

Apple Pay works in the HomeHerald iPhone app with nothing for the board to set up. Here's where residents see it, what it needs, and why it doesn't show on the web or Android.

Apple Pay needs no setup from the board. Once your HOA’s bank account is connected through Stripe, residents who pay by card in the HomeHerald iPhone app see Apple Pay at the top of the payment sheet, with card below it. There is no Apple Pay toggle, no domain to verify, and no separate Stripe step.

Prerequisites

  • Your HOA’s bank account connected through Stripe - see Enabling Stripe payments
  • A resident using the HomeHerald iPhone app, with a card in Apple Wallet

That’s all. If residents can pay online at all, Apple Pay is already there for iPhone app users.

Where Apple Pay shows up

  • Paying a balance in the iPhone app. When a resident taps Pay Now, then Pay by card under Pay Online, Stripe’s payment sheet opens with Apple Pay first, then card. (Pay from a bank account opens Stripe’s payment page in the phone’s browser instead; Apple Pay is a card payment.)
  • Setting up AutoPay in the iPhone app. The same sheet opens when a resident saves a payment method for Dues AutoPay.

Where it does not

  • The web. In any browser (including Safari on an iPhone or a Mac), the payment form offers card and bank account only.
  • The Android app. Card and bank account only.

Testing it

You need an iPhone with the HomeHerald app and a card in Wallet:

  1. Sign in as a test resident (or yourself, on an account you don’t mind making a real payment from)
  2. Use an account whose home has an outstanding balance
  3. On My Home, tap Pay Now on the Account Activity card, then Pay by card under Pay Online
  4. You should see Apple Pay at the top of the payment sheet
  5. Tap it; the Face ID / Touch ID / passcode prompt comes up
  6. Confirm - the payment processes through Stripe

If Apple Pay doesn’t appear:

  • You’re not in the iPhone app. The web and the Android app don’t offer Apple Pay.
  • Your iPhone doesn’t have Apple Pay set up. Add a card in Wallet first.
  • There’s no Pay Online option at all. Your HOA’s bank account isn’t connected yet - see Enabling Stripe payments.

Fees

Apple Pay fees are the same as regular Stripe card fees: 4% + $0.30. Apple doesn’t charge extra; the convenience is built into the same card-processing rate.

Configure pass-through vs. absorb the same way as cards - see Payment methods overview.

Why some residents prefer Apple Pay

A few reasons it’s worth pointing iPhone users to the app:

  • Speed. No typing card numbers. Face ID and done.
  • Privacy. Apple Pay sends a one-time token instead of the card number.
  • Familiarity. iPhone users use Apple Pay for everything else. Paying dues the same way feels normal.

The limit: it only works in the iPhone app. So it’s a “nice to have” alongside cards and bank accounts, not a replacement.

Google Pay (a note)

Google Pay is not offered. Residents on Android or on the web pay by card or bank account.

Troubleshooting

“Some residents see Apple Pay, others don’t” Expected. Only residents paying in the iPhone app, with a card in Wallet, see it.

“Apple Pay shows but the payment fails” Apple Pay runs through the same Stripe account as every card payment, so the same checks apply: your Stripe onboarding must be complete. Check your Stripe account for anything flagged, then try a regular card payment to see whether it fails the same way.
